Rugby

Written by the pupils of Raheen N.S.

For six weeks we had rugby in school. A coach named Nicole came and we have learned a lot. Throughout the training we had fun and everyone participated.

We started by playing fun games to warm up. In one of the games we were divided into two teams and to begin with we stood in two lines.

A person at one end of the line had a rugby ball which was then passed along the line , to its end and back again. After we had practised we had a race to decide which team was faster. The purpose of the game was to improve the underarm throw, catching the ball with your hands in the correct w shape and to try not to drop the ball.

Another game was called rats and mice. Everybody was paired with rats and mice back to back in the centre of the pitch.

When the coach called rats they would run and score a try while the mice would attempt to tag them.

Other warm ups include running from Connaught to Leinster Ulster and Munster!

We play team matches for Ulster, Leinster and Connaught.

First ,two teams play together. Then the winning team plays the third team in the group.

An important drill for beginners and improvers is to practise passing and catching.

When catching the ball have your hands shaped in the W formation.

Otherwise you will drop the ball.

Passing the ball to your team means passing backwards.

Passing forward is a foul.

Running to receive a pass is key to success.

During the rugby session we played a series of matches .In these noncontact matches , one team starts with the ball.

The opposing team try to tag the player.

If they succeed the team passes the ball backwards to their team members .

Players with possession make a run for the line and score a try.
